On2 Technologies, Inc., a leader in video compression solutions, announced today the introduction of significant improvements to the On2 VP6 video technology used in Adobe Flash 8 and 9 and Flash Lite 3.

The expected increase of quality in content encoded with On2 VP6 in some cases improved up to 40%. The new On2 VP6 technology is fully compatible with the existing decoder used in Flash player.

For those not familiar with On2’s VP6 compression scheme, it is one of the Internet’s most productive video codecs and it is used to encode all genres of video targeted for web delivery in Flash format. Chances are you’ve seen this video codec in action, but have you seen it in high-definition?

Notable Features:

  • Encoded video in this profile requires up to 30% less CPU power to playback
  • Focus on dramatic speed improvements in the VP6 encoder
  • Up to 40% of improved quality vs previous version

How do I get the On2 VP6 Upgrade?

On2 VP6 improvement release is planned for later this year. The improvements will be introduced as a free upgrade to the On2 Flix suite of encoding and publishing tools for Flash video. I am not sure exactly when Adobe Flash will have this new version incorporated within the Adobe Flash Video Encoder, however, On2 Flix has a suite of applications to fit various users.
